How Each of the Rat Pack Members Died
They were the kings of cool — Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop — the legendary Rat Pack that defined the glamour, danger, and excess of 1950s and 1960s Hollywood. Together, they ruled Las Vegas, conquered music and film, and embodied a kind of effortless style the world has never forgotten.
But behind the tuxedos, cigarettes, and laughter was a different story — one of broken friendships, loneliness, illness, and tragedy. Here’s how each member of the Rat Pack met his end, and how the legends of cool finally took their last bow.
Frank Sinatra (1915–1998)
Cause of death: Heart attack
Known as “Ol’ Blue Eyes”, Frank Sinatra was the group’s undeniable leader — a man whose voice could melt hearts and whose temper could terrify anyone who crossed him. He was both adored and feared, commanding the stage and the screen with unmatched charisma.
In his final years, Sinatra’s health began to decline. He suffered from heart disease, high blood pressure, and bladder cancer. By the late 1990s, he had endured multiple heart attacks and had retired from public life.
On May 14, 1998, at the age of 82, Sinatra died of a massive heart attack at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. His wife, Barbara, was at his bedside. His final words to her were reportedly, “I’m losing.”
The world mourned the passing of a giant — the man who once sang “I Did It My Way” had, in the end, done exactly that.
Dean Martin (1917–1995)
Cause of death: Respiratory failure due to emphysema
The suave crooner Dean Martin, often called “The King of Cool,” was Sinatra’s closest friend and perhaps the only man who could match him in charm. On stage, Martin’s laid-back humor and smoky voice made him the perfect counterbalance to Sinatra’s intensity.
But behind the laughter, Dean lived with quiet sorrow. After the tragic death of his son, Dean Paul Martin, in a 1987 plane crash, he was never the same. He withdrew from public life, and those close to him said his spark dimmed forever.
Years of heavy smoking and drinking took their toll. In his later years, he developed lung cancer and struggled to breathe. Dean Martin died on Christmas Day, December 25, 1995, at the age of 78, in his Beverly Hills home.
Sinatra, devastated by the loss, was reportedly seen standing outside Dean’s house, silently paying his respects.
Sammy Davis Jr. (1925–1990)
Cause of death: Throat cancer
Known as “Mr. Show Business,” Sammy Davis Jr. was the Rat Pack’s most electrifying performer — a singer, dancer, comedian, and actor with unstoppable energy. But his life was also marked by racism, controversy, and a constant struggle for acceptance in a segregated America.
A lifelong smoker, Davis was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1989. Though doctors advised removing his voice box to save his life, Sammy refused. “I’d rather have a short life with a voice than a long one without it,” he said.
He passed away on May 16, 1990, at just 64 years old, in his Beverly Hills home. Sinatra paid for his medical bills and funeral, saying, “He was my brother.”
Sammy’s final performance had been just months earlier — a brief appearance at the 1989 Academy Awards, where he received a standing ovation.
Peter Lawford (1923–1984)
Cause of death: Cardiac arrest due to liver and kidney failure
Peter Lawford, the suave English actor and brother-in-law of President John F. Kennedy, was the Rat Pack’s Hollywood connection. He introduced the group to the Kennedy family, helping link show business with political power — a move that would later haunt him.
When Sinatra’s ties to organized crime made him a liability, the Kennedys distanced themselves — and Sinatra blamed Lawford. Their friendship ended bitterly, and Peter’s career began to crumble.
Years of alcohol and drug abuse ravaged his health. Lawford died on December 24, 1984, at the age of 61, from cardiac arrest related to liver and kidney failure.
He was cremated, but due to financial and personal disputes, his ashes were temporarily stored in a filing cabinet before being buried years later in Westwood Memorial Park — not far from Marilyn Monroe, his rumored lover.
Joey Bishop (1918–2007)
Cause of death: Multiple organ failure
The last surviving member of the Rat Pack, Joey Bishop was the group’s quiet wit — a talented comedian who often played the straight man to the others’ antics. Though less famous than Sinatra or Martin, his dry humor held the group together during their wild Las Vegas years.
After the Rat Pack faded, Bishop continued working in television and stand-up, though he remained somewhat bitter about being overshadowed by his flashier friends.
He lived a long life, passing away on October 17, 2007, at 89 years old, from multiple organ failure at his home in Newport Beach, California. With his death, an era truly ended.
The End of an Era
Together, the Rat Pack represented an age of swagger, friendship, and fun — an untouchable mix of class and rebellion. Yet their endings remind us that even legends aren’t immortal.
Sinatra, Martin, Davis, Lawford, and Bishop — five men bound by music, laughter, and the kind of fame that comes only once in a century — all faced mortality in their own way.
Their voices may be gone, but their legacy — smoky lounges, crisp tuxedos, and the sound of laughter echoing through Vegas nights — still lingers.
